Outstanding Star Wars RPG
I’ve played every version of SW: KotOR in existence (XBox, several PC editions, PowerPC Mac, Intel Mac, iPad), this edition is one of the best. It runs beautifully on my non-retina 2012 MacBook Pro and stutters only in outdoor areas at a 1600 * 1200 px. resolution. Frame buffer effects are buggy on Intel HD Graphics, sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. Soft shadows don’t seem to be supported on that graphics chip either: enabling soft shadows means shadows don’t show up at all for me. The game still doesn’t support widescreen resolutions, but that’s unsurprising since the resolutions were hardcoded, including the positions of various user interface elements. However, IMHO the game looks great at all resolutions, which is unsurprising when you realize it was made to look amazing on old CRT TVs.
As far as the gameplay experience is concerned, SW: KotOR is still my all-time favorite video game, and with good reason. It’s still the archetypical RPG in many ways: you get to explore several environments with a party of adventurers, collect items, improve your characters’ outfits, converse with several dozens of interesting people and be the hero or villain of the story. The voice acting and soundtrack are incredibly well-made and fit the game’s ambiance like a glove, the story is compelling and features a great plot twist, and by the end of the game you feel as though the story has progressed the way it did because of how YOU played the game. Subsequent games from the developer have expanded on the game mechanics in SW: KotOR, but this game has been truly timeless and is still a blast to play.
